During this rotation, I was placed in Woodhull Hospital for OBGYN. I was looking forward to this rotation as I am interested in Women’s health and I thought it would be really interesting to participate in their care and gain real time exposure to the field. During the first two weeks, I was placed in the clinic. During this part I was able to practice skills and procedures such as Pap smears, pelvic exams, and breast exams. I was pleased with my progress as I became more accustomed to completing these exams with more confidence. I also focused on explaining to the patient what I was about to do and helping to create a calm and relaxed environment to ensure that the patient felt comfortable. During my week on GYN, I had the opportunity to round on post-op patients. I thought this was interesting because I had enjoyed my surgery rotation, but had not seen many patients post-op after gynecological procedures. This further allowed me to display care and concern while focusing on the needs of the patient. Throughout my rotations, this was something that was very important to me and I was pleased that my last rotation provided me with the opportunity to interact with and assist many women in various states of pain and fear. This enabled me to provide emotional and clinical support to patients while also realizing for myself that this was a role I truly enjoyed and thrived in. I was able to develop relationships with patients on the L&D floor as well. Whether it was assessing their pain levels, celebrating as a new baby was born, or using a translator to explain to the patient what to expect over the next few hours, I noticed that I was able to relate to each patient. I was also pleased that I felt more comfortable in regards to differentiating the diagnosis and appropriate management for many patients that I would not have been able to do during earlier rotations. I found that I was able to utilize and synthesize the knowledge I had gathered across the many fields I had rotated through and was able to present and manage patients more accurately. This was also something that I aimed to see significant progress in throughout my rotations and was pleased to see that I had improved in this area. As the clinical year is complete, I look forward to utilizing these skills and knowledge to provide comprehensive care to all of my patients with passion and care. As I move forward, I intend to continue seeking out mentors to further my understanding of the field and improve my clinical skills.
